Installation for Drainpipes

Installation (in development)

Developed with Sajid Akbar and Terry Peng, this installation drew on the proliferation of drainpipes which punctuate the famous walkways throughout the Heygate Estate, subtly intervening in the quietude of its abandonment by using them as vehicles to embed a diffuse sound field within the existing soundscape. Feedback loops are propagated through the pipes by burying a small mic element and radio transmitter in the bottom end, and a radio receiver and mylar speaker in the top. Variations in the pipes’ length produces different pitches. Emerging frequencies dissolve and reflect across the surrounding decaying walls, amplifying the skeletal buildings whose infrastructural sounds and the domestic auditory presence of their former residents have long been silenced.
